Trench warfare hits suburb

RESIDENTS of Uitenhage’s Fairbridge Heights Extension have slammed the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality for negligence after its workers dug several trenches in the area while fixing leaking water pipes five months ago – and has left them open since then.

The residents from Goedehoop Avenue, Jakaranda Crescent, Van der Graaf Avenue, Van der Stel Avenue and the corner of Somerset and Bax streets said they had tried since the beginning of the year to have the holes filled or covered by the municipality, but to no avail.

Bettia Hall, 77, of Jakaranda Crescent, said: “I have thought about filling up the one in front of my house but it might take me a few months to do so because I still have a pain in my back from an operation. Maybe by December, I might have filled it up.

“There are more holes down the road. They are all over the place.

“I have reported the problem to the municipality but they just don’t come out. This is a big inconvenience.
