Huge blaze guts Uitenhage classrooms

FIREFIGHTERS battled for about three hours to contain a massive fire last night which gutted a large part of Uitenhage’s Jubilee Park Primary School.

Three classrooms and a library were completely destroyed in the blaze, which started at about 8pm.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.

Three fire engines were dispatched to contain the flames and firemen were still hard at work at 11pm last night.

Jubilee Park school principal Lorna Bosman said the 153 Grade 4 pupils would be the hardest hit because both their classrooms were completely destroyed.

The library, which burnt to the ground, was the only one on the premises.

The school has been trying for at least five years to get the provincial Department of Education to build new classrooms to replace some of the dilapidated wooden ones.
