Protesters block road, accuse council of broken promises

TIMOTHY Valley residents yesterday blocked roads with burning tyres and stoned vehicles amid allegations that the municipality had failed to fulfil its promisesto fix their homes.

The Public Order Policing unit, armed with shotguns and driving armoured vehicles, was deployed as a precautionary measure.

Police fired random shots and threw a stun grenade in an attempt to disperse protesters.

Stanford Road from Laurence Erasmus Drive to William Slammert Drive in Bethelsdorp was blocked off from 8am. Residents packed rocks along the side streets while burning tyres amid protests about empty promises made by the municipality.

Police said the protest had started at 4am.

Upset residents said municipal officials had made empty promises regarding the repair of their poorly built homes in the Timothy Valley area.
