ALMOST 2000 children in Uitenhage and Despatch were all smiles yesterday after receiving shoes and windbreakers from the Uitenhage Despatch Development Initiative (UDDI) Back2School campaign.

The UDDI, in conjunction with other sponsors, donated 120 pairs of Toms shoes and five windbreakers each to 15 schools during a handover ceremony held at the Nelson Mandela Bay Science and Technology Centre.

The campaign was launched in 2009 and, over the years, has donated stationery packs, eye tests and food to thousands of children around Nelson Mandela Bay.

UDDI acting chief executive Richard Gibson said: “Back2- School has been a wonderful journey and we are grateful to our sponsors, including Sesego Cares who donated 1800 shoes, for making it possible.”

In the past, the UDDI only focused on five schools, but decided to go further this year, he said.
