Buffalo tramples Addo ranger

Michael Kimberley

A FIELD ranger is lucky to be alive after he was trampled by a one-ton buffalo at the Addo Elephant National Park yesterday. Sandile Gunya, 40, was airlifted to Greenacres Hospital in Port Elizabeth shortly after the attack. He was bleeding from the nose, ears and mouth.

The ranger was caught off guard when the Cape buffalo crashed through the gate of a locked pen.

As the buffalo bolted down the boma’s passageway, it charged into Gunya, knocking him over and trampling him.

The seriously injured ranger managed to get up and jump over a nearby gate, before slumping to the ground. Paramedics were summoned. Two other rangers managed to escape unscathed.
