CHILDREN from a high school in New Brighton, Port Elizabeth, will compete in their first tennis tournament today.

About 40 Lwandlekazi High School pupils, who have each only had four tennis lessons, will compete in their first tournament at the tennis courts in Young Park.

The children are being coached by former semi-professional Italian tennis player Michele Sissa.

Amanda Mkosini, a 19-year-old Grade 11 pupil, said though she had never played tennis before she was “looking forward” to the tournament.

Ntomboxolo Dyasi, 16, also in Grade 11, said she would like to continue playing tennis and thought US tennis star “Serena Williams is the perfect tennis player”.

Another Grade 11 pupil, 17-year-old Thembisa Befile, said “it’s the first time [I’m playing] tennis and I find it enjoyable”.
