Burnt-out school scandal

IT could be another year before government rebuilds a burnt out and dilapidated school which Nelson Mandela Bay’s North End residents say is a haven for vagrants, drugs and prostitution.

Khumbulani High School in Leyland Street burnt down in 2010 and residents said it had since been used by homeless people suspected to be behind a spate of crime in the area.

Residents said they had complained to Ward 5 DA councillor Jeremy Davis, but to no avail.

Tessa Lee, 65, who lives opposite the school, said she had also called the Mount Road police station several times. “They are so used to my voice that they drop the phone on me now. There are prostitutes there, they scream, beat each other up and do it on the [street] corner.

“The police say they cannot do anything until I catch them in the act. There have been three stabbings and a body was found there. The police are useless,” Lee said.
