ONE of the most crime-ridden and impoverished areas in Nelson Mandela Bay is about to have a major facelift thanks to a R50-million boost by a German development bank.

Helenvale, which is notorious for a range of social ills like high unemployment, domestic violence, drug abuse and gangsterism, is set to benefit from the cash injection for community development and infrastructure projects.

Mandela Bay Development Agency (MBDA) chief executive Pierre Voges said a team of consultants would be hired to come up with a master plan to transform the area.

MBDA planning and development manager for township renewal Eldrid Uithaler said there were five areas identified for intervention:

  • Safer schools;
  • Youth development;
  • Alleviating domestic violence;
  • Infrastructure development with a waste recycling component; and
  • Studies around alternative methods of housing delivery.

“For example, because the area has a high level of domestic abuse, the funding could provide a victim support centre,” he said.
