Sovereign Foods employees cry foul

THERE was chaos in Kruisriver Road, Uitenhage, yesterday as an illegal strike by employees of Sovereign Foods entered its second day over management’s alleged failure to allow the planned election of 12 shop stewards.

The employees, who reported for work earlier than scheduled yesterday, were allowed onto the premises but soon turned their position to their colleagues’ advantage.

One of six forum members for the protesters, Ndeyobo Sifuba, was pleased with the way the protests had gone, both inside and outside the premises.

“We’ve done everything by the book. We requested an election on May 7 and they [management] simply rejected our grievances. The only thing they told us since yesterday [Tuesday] was that they were going to call the police to arrest us,” Sifuba said.

Sovereign Foods declined to comment.
