Man who killed gang rival in street sent to jail for life

A HELENVALE man convicted of killing a gang rival on a busy road four years ago has been sentenced to life behind bars.

Jermaine Baadjies, 31, was found guilty of murder, attempted murder and the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition on Tuesday. He had pleaded not guilty.

Port Elizabeth High Court Judge Phakamisa Tshiki yesterday sentenced Baadjies to life for the murder, 12 years for attempted murder, 15 years for the unlawful possession of a firearm and 10 years for the unlawful possession of ammunition. The sentences will run concurrently.

Baadjies was found guilty of walking up to Angelo Hendricks on May 27 2009 and shooting him several times at point-blank range.

Hendricks, known as Dakota, had been listening to pastor Brandon Olivier preaching in Kobus Road.
