A PARKSIDE father and his young son were lucky to escape from their car just seconds before it burst into flames after a collision on the N2 freeway yesterday.

A short while earlier, traffic on the freeway came to a standstill for half an hour, after a vehicle struck three calves which had wandered onto the freeway.

Although the accident happened just after 4am, it took more than three hours before the animals were removed from the side of the road.

Nelson Mandela Bay Municipal spokesman Mthubanzi Mniki said the accident happened next to the Kempston Road off-ramp. The clearing-up took time, causing the traffic jam.
