THEIR long walk from Port Elizabeth to parliament was delayed by several hours yesterday when one of a group of Khoisan chiefs – on a mission to highlight the plight of indigenous tribes in the country – fell ill with less than 200km to go.

Charmaine Booysen, 40, of Gelvandale, and five men from the Khoisan and Damasonqua tribes are walking to Cape Town where they plan to hand their grievances over to parliament.

The rest of the crew includes chief Khoisan SA, 46, of the Khoisan tribe, headman Patrick Delport, 51, of the Damasonqua tribe, George Danster 40, Ivano Hugo 30, and Shane Plaatjies, 18.

But their walk was delayed yesterday when Booysen spent several hours being examined by nurses at the Riviersonderend Clinic. “I thought I was having a heart attack. I felt this pain in my chest but am still on the road,” Booysen said.
