THE harrowing details of how a Port Elizabeth businessman was drugged, beaten and held hostage in a tiny, filthy room for almost a month was revealed to a packed courtroom yesterday.

Meanwhile, outside the Port Elizabeth Magistrate’s Court, about 50 Bangladeshi nationals protested against the possibility of bail for the alleged kidnapper.

The state is opposing bail for Khurshed “Shiblo” Alam, 39, accused of being the mastermind behind the kidnapping of family man Altaf Hamad on March 9.

Hamad, 30, originally from Bangladesh, was allegedly held hostage in a warehouse in Durban for 21 days before his dramatic escape on March 30.

The hearing continues on Thursday.
