Eyesore hotel irks residents

THE once prestigious Seaview Hotel – known as the Jewel of the Ocean – has tarnished, leaving nearby residents irate because repeated complaints about it being a health and fire hazard have fallen on deaf ears.

Close to 200 Seaview residents signed a petition to the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality in December, raising their concerns that overgrown vegetation and the deterioration of the state of the erven in the past few years now constitute a high fire and health risk.

The petition also drew attention to the collapse of the old three-storey hotel building and outbuildings, dangerously exposed French drains, toilets and urinals, and a basement infested with rodents and cockroaches.

Residents fear the deteriorating state of the property is contributing to the dropping of property values in the area.
