MUNICIPAL officials worked through last night trying to vacuum up the fine sediment that made the water in the Newton Park swimming pool murky, causing day two of the SA National Aquatic Championships in Port Elizabeth to be cancelled.
The pool – one of only two in the country where the tournament, the qualifying event for the Fina World Championships in Barcelona in July and the disabled world championships in Montreal in August, can be held – was discoloured after a pump burst a day before the start of the championships on Monday.
After briefing coaches at the pool last night, EP Aquatics president Tiaan de Jager said although the water would not be pristine today, the tournament would resume as “the majority of the dirt will be extracted”.
