THE five friends who died in a car accident on the N2 in Port Elizabeth last Sunday all received a moving tribute during a joint funeral at the weekend.

More than 2000 mourners, including Nelson Mandela Bay mayor Ben Fihla and chief whip Joy Seale, crammed into the West End Community Centre to bid a final farewell to the friends who all lived in Grootboom Street, Arcadia.

Vernal Charles, 27, his brother Angelo, 19, Vivian Williams, 22, Roderick de Jager, 19, and Keegen Arkeldien, 19, all died in the accident near the Kempston Road off-ramp last Sunday.

The friends were headed towards Summerstrand when the driver, Vernal Charles, apparently swerved to avoid hitting a pedestrian.

Many mourners were forced to stand outside the venue on Saturday because there was not enough space inside.
