Neglected stadium at mercy of developers

THE Mandela Bay Development Agency (MDBA) is to invite proposals to develop the abandoned Eastern Province Rugby Union stadium in Summerstrand.

The agency’s chief executive, Pierre Voges, said they would invite developers to submit proposals in June or July.

The stadium has become derelict and an eyesore. It was last used in 2010. Some of its walls, seats and structure have collapsed, leading to calls for it to be demolished.

Voges said they would only demolish the stadium after receiving proposals from developers.

“It will cost about R5-million to demolish it and we will not be demolishing it immediately. Property development is now in a bad state.
