Anger as Bay taxi driver released

A PORT Elizabeth father who was squashed between a bakkie and wall in a freak accident on Thursday last week, has slammed the court’s decision to release the taxi driver who allegedly caused the near-fatal crash.

While Jeffrey Krune, 53, of New Brighton, cannot walk because of his injuries, taxi driver Zakisile Jokani, 53, is a free man. The state has declined to prosecute him after he crashed into a bakkie which then ploughed into Electric Express in Govan Mbeki Avenue.

Jokani was arrested while allegedly trying to flee the scene of the accident which occurred at around 4pm. Bystanders claimed he was speeding and his reckless and negligent driving nearly cost several people their lives.

He appeared in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate’s Court on Friday. However, the state withdrew the charges against him.
