SPEC-SAVERS, the official sponsor of Ironman in the Eastern Cape, made the devastating announcement yesterday that it would withdraw its multimillion-rand sponsorship from the event after this year.
The company has pumped about R30-million into the world-renowned event since its inception a decade ago.
The news was made public shortly after a Port Elizabeth sports shop owner accused Ironman event organisers of bullying – a matter which is now before the Competition Commission.
Spec-Savers chief executive Bryan Dowley said the company had decided to move on to other social projects where it could help make a difference.
