THE second Donkin Downhill Dash went ahead at the weekend despite the track being drenched with rain.

Competitors posted surprisingly fast times and returned on Sunday for the finals. “Long boarding requires a lot of discipline and skill and although it’s not a well-recognised sport we appreciate events like this,” said competitor Nick Simic. Kyle Weeks was the winner in the open class with a time of 1 minute and 16:63 seconds.

Tom Rushovich came in second place with 1:16.88 and Andrej von Walter took third with 1:17.18.

Spectators arrived in droves on Saturday to cheer on the skaters.

“What a great event. I was really stoked with the race despite the rain,” said spectator Jason Lance Brown.

Creative director of Numb City Jason Nel said: “With the rain we were not sure if the skaters would continue with the competition but they all competed and had really fantastic times.”

Nel said they had already started planning the 2014 event. “We want to make it even bigger and hope the weather plays along next time,” he said.
