No ambitious hopes for education budget

AS Eastern Cape Education MEC Mandla Makupula gears up to deliver the department’s R26.9-billion budget speech at the provincial legislature today, those on the ground are wishing for just the mere basics – sufficient teachers, transport, food and adequate school buildings.

Makupula’s department was once again given the lion’s share of the province’s R59.2-billion – at R26.9-billion it is up by R700-million on last year’s allocation.

While some would expect the increased share and 4000-plus decrease in teaching posts to mean the end of the department’s financial strife, education stakeholders were not optimistic that the added amount would be used wisely.
