Firefighters get blaze under control

FIREFIGHTERS in Nelson Mandela Bay have been working around the clock fighting fires that started burning last week, and yesterday moved to areas where lives or property could be endangered.

The fires have been burning on and off since Thursday and originated in the Noordhoek area, but by yesterday had spread to the Cape Recife Nature Reserve along Marine Drive. About 30 firefighters scrambled into the dense bush to dampen down vegetation in an attempt to prevent the blaze from spreading.

Officials blocked the road leading into the reserve as firefighters tried to stop the blaze from spreading to the Pine Lodge Resort.
