ANGRY residents pelted police with stones when they demolished illegal shacks at Motherwell’s Peace Village yesterday.
The police were acting on instructions from the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality.
The more than 300 residents also blockaded Tyinirha Road with stones and burning tyres.
Police – who arrived in four nyalas and at least 10 police vans – then fired teargas at the crowd.
Siphiwe Dayimani, chairman of the South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco) in Ward 54, said residents were angry as they had not even been given a chance to remove their belongings.
