THERE was drama on the Port Elizabeth beachfront yesterday when a suspected thief crashed his car into another vehicle while being chased by his alleged victim.

The suspect, who was not injured, was arrested and taken to the Humewood police station.

The accident happened near the McDonald’s in Humewood. Traffic was interrupted briefly while the vehicles were removed.

Nico Antoniou’s vehicle was broken into two weeks ago in Summerstrand and his laptop stolen.

The Markman Township marketing agent said yesterday he had received information from a security guard yesterday that the suspect had been spotted near Barney’s Tavern. “He immediately called me from Barney’s. I went outside where I called the guy but he ran away and sped off in his vehicle,” Antoniou said. He immediately jumped into his vehicle and chased after the man, who was heading towards Central.

Antoniou said the man first jumped one set of red traffic lights and then a second on the corner of La Roche Drive and Humewood Road, where he crashed into an Audi.

“His vehicle flipped three times in the air and rolled three times before landing on its roof.”

Police Captain Stanley Jarvis said the man, in his 30s, had been arrested for reckless or negligent driving and theft of a laptop.

He will appear in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate’s Court soon.
