Illegal dumping on the increase in Helenvale

Shaanaaz de Jager

HELENVALE residents have had enough of illegal dumping around them, with more than 40 sites identified in the sprawling neighbourhood. Unhygienic rubbish including used disposable nappies, plastic and glass bottles, cans and packets is creating a breeding ground for flies, rats and mice.

As a result, many residents are unable to open their doors because of the unbearable stench.

Ward councillor Nico du Plessis said he had raised the issue with the municipality on several occasions.

He said it was “really unfair” to expect residents to live in these “unhealthy, hazardous and downright unpleasant conditions and surrounds while R40.8-million of taxpayers’ money is used on the Afcon [Africa Cup of Nations] cup”.
