Doctors restore gift of sight to dozens


THE sight of dozens of Eastern Cape residents was restored last week as part of efforts to commemorate World Sight Day.


The patients who benefited from the cataract operations were all partially or totally blind, and would not usually be able to fund the procedure. In private healthcare facilities it could cost up to R20000.


A cataract is a clouding of the lens in the eye and affects vision – mostly in the elderly. Other causes of cataracts are diabetes, personal behaviour such as smoking and prolonged exposure to ultra-violet sunlight.
