Somali shopkeepers fend off looters as violence spreads in the Bay

FOREIGN shopkeepers in Port Elizabeth frantically threw food from their stores in a desperate attempt to stop looters from entering their shops yesterday.
More than 100 shops were stripped bare, vandalised or petrol- bombed as the violence, which started on Sunday, moved from New Brighton to other areas.
Police said the looting, which showed no sign of abating last night, had spread to Missionvale and Bethelsdorp by 10pm.
Hundreds of traumatised Somalis sought refuge in Korsten and tried to find storage space for the few things they managed to salvage from their shops.
Two men were taken to hospital last night after they were attacked by looters in Kwazakhele.
