AN Eastern Cape bride-to-be spent what was supposed to be her wedding day in an induced coma in hospital following a tragic car crash in which her fiance and two children were killed.
Saturday was supposed to be the happiest day of Esmare Gerber’s life. Instead, friends and family spent the day around her hospital bed, praying for her speedy recovery.
Her vision of walking down the aisle with the man of her dreams has been shattered, but she does not know that.
Phillip Nel, 34, their daughter, Mieke Nel, 11 months, and Gerber’s child from a previous relationship, Twane Potgieter, 3, died at the scene of the crash.
Esmare, 28, has a punctured lung, multiple broken ribs, a broken arm and two broken hips. She was lucky to escape with her life when the car her husband-to-be was driving was in a head-on collision with a bakkie, allegedly travelling on the wrong side of the road.
