‘Monster’ husband laughs as Avril describes torture

“MONSTER” husband Frederick Gordon sat in the dock and laughed as his wife, Avril, told yesterday how jealousy drove him to beat, burn and rape her – to the point where she almost died.

Her harrowing testimony reduced many in the courtroom to tears.

Testifying in the Port Elizabeth Regional Court for the first time since Gordon’s arrest on March 25 last year, Avril said: “You don’t know Freddy when he gets cross. He didn’t have to open his mouth, he only had to show me with his eyes. A monster would come out.”

Police had to kick down the door to their Forest Hill flat to rescue Avril, 53, who had allegedly been chained up and abused for several months. Her blood was spattered on the walls. She was so badly beaten she had to undergo reconstructive surgery.

Gordon, 42, has pleaded not guilty to charges of kidnapping, attempted murder and rape.

As a result of the alleged torture, Avril is blind in one eye, deaf in one ear, battles to walk, and the muscles in her hands have collapsed.
