Nepalese pedals for peace

A NEPALESE man has used his passion for cycling to promote peace and raise awareness of environmental issues around the world.

Furtemba Sherpa, 35, hopes to visit 151 countries by 2020.

“Cycling is my foremost passion and I have been cycling around the world since 2003 advocating world peace and environmental protection by endorsing the goodness of cycling, hoping people will be encouraged to travel on their bicycle instead of in an automobile,” he said.

Sherpa, who is staying with friends in Johannesburg while he awaits a visa extension, said South Africa was the most challenging country he has been to since starting his journey nine years – and 91 213km – ago.

“I am bound to stay in South Africa for a long time because of the bureaucratic procedure. I applied for my visa on September 21 but I was told that the immigration officer lost my documents.

“Since then I have reapplied, without any luck,” he said.

“Because of the delay getting the visa, I have to stay longer, which hinders my tour to other countries.”
