OFFICIALS are racing against time to ensure that Humewood Beach is ready for summer after the recent floods which devastated Nelson Mandela Bay’s only Blue Flag attraction. If not completed, the closure of the beach during the festive season will be another major blow to the city’s ailing tourism industry.
Economic development and recreational services executive director Zolile Siswana said work had already started and teams were working around the clock to get the beach shipshape in time for the festive season. The repairs to Humewood Beach alone would cost about R1.5-million.
“There has been extensive damage to the walkways and infrastructure. There has also been a lot of electrical damage and [we] need to replenish the sand because of soil erosion,” he said.
