IF one thing is certain following Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan’s medium-term budget policy statement yesterday, it is that things are only going to get tougher for taxpaying South Africans.
While tax experts expressed little surprise at what Gordhan presented, they said the South African Revenue Service (SARS) would continue to tighten the screws on taxpayers, especially given the economic slowdown.
But Gordhan was also praised for remaining resolute amid the violent mining strikes and uncertain economic climate South Africa was experiencing.
“Pravin Gordhan displays enormous courage in sticking to his guns and not changing the game plan in spite of the economic uncertainty that has prevailed in recent weeks,” Rhodes University Business School professor and tax columnist Matthew Lester said.
