Flood damage

Eight people died during three days of heavy rain and localised flooding in the Eastern Cape while millions of rands in damage were caused to the province’s roads, bridges and houses.

Port Alfred and the Bushmans River were particularly hard hit with close to 400 mm falling in the area in the past week.

The regional manager of the Eastern Cape Weather Service, Hugh van Niekerk, said yesterday that further showers or thundershowers were expected until about 2 pm today but that the weather will clear by late afternoon.

After close to 200 mm of rain fell in the metro, rivers in Nelson Mandela Bay, especially the Baakens River and the Swartskops River burst their banks by yesterday afternoon.
Some of the worst flooding was experienced by residents of Old Grahamstown Road in Swartkops whose yards were completely flooded.(21/10/2012).
