Bay housing projects fall to pieces

Hendrick Mphande and Sive Zuzile

TWO housing projects in Nelson Mandela Bay are quite literally facing collapse as some structurally defective houses lack window frames while the brickwork of others is falling apart.

Residents are demanding answers from the municipality and provincial Department of Human Settlements for giving the nod to shoddy workmanship at the Zanemvula housing project in Chatty extension and Govan Mbeki (Izinyoka) informal settlement.

About 900 RDP units were poorly constructed in Izinyoka and another 600 in Chatty and both projects require immediate fixing.

When The Herald visited the projects, the majority of the units did not have ceilings and deep cracks from the foundation up to the rooftops were evident.
