PORT Elizabeth twin brothers are moonwalking their way to the national Mzansi Magic Market Day Talent Show stage after winning the regional competition earlier this month.

The Michael Jackson impersonators – Liyabona and Lihle Vena, 14, from Dora near New Brighton – first got hooked on MJ’s moves after watching his live show in 2008. “My brother is the one who knew how to moonwalk and taught me. Our first performance was at a neighbour’s 50th birthday in 2009. The word spread quickly and we started performing at other events and birthday parties,” Liyabona said.

“We are also popular in our neighbourhood.”

Lihle said it was not difficult to learn the moves.

“It looks difficult but it’s not. I did it barefoot when I started. We train every day when there is a competition coming up. We have been waiting for this opportunity and it will help put us on the map.

“At first we were using school shoes before dad bought us Dakotas [brand of shoe],” Lihle said.

“We watch his show for rehearsal but also added our own moves. We fell in love with his dancing after our father bought his live show.”

Both boys are in Grade 9 at Cowan High School. They said they were excited by winning the regional phase of Mzansi Magic Market Day competition.

“We did not know it was a competition – we thought we were just performing.

“The crowd was really into us, but we did not expect to win.

“We plead with people to vote for us,” Liyabona said.

The twins wear black and white outfits with the Michael Jackson trademark white socks, hats and a glove.

To vote for the twins, visit the Mzansi Magic Market Day website and Facebook page.

Mzansi Magic Market Day regional coordinator Michelle Brown said the public’s votes would count for 20%, and the judges, 80%.

“The public should vote for our PE boys,” she said.

The national competition will be on September 29.
