Help for anti-poaching efforts

SANParks Honorary Rangers chairman John Turner (left), Unitrans representative Linda Joyce and Addo Elephant National Park manager Norman Johnson inspect some of the R500000 of anti-poaching and field patrol gear donated to the park in a ceremony last week.

The donation, including binoculars, tents, sleeping bags, backpacks and chest webbing, was facilitated by the honorary rangers corps, which supports the park.

The rangers will use the gear during day and night patrols aimed at preventing poaching, especially rhino poaching, park spokeswoman Megan Taplin said.

Figures issued by the environment department last week confirmed a total of 220 rhinos had been killed illegally in South Africa since the beginning of the year.
