PORT Elizabeth is living up to its “Watersports capital of Africa” tag as it prepares to host yet another event, The Boardwalk Hobie 16 national catamaran sailing championship, at Hobie Beach tomorrow.

About 50 boats will find their way to Port Elizabeth for the four- day event. “There are seven local boats participating,” organiser Andrew Ward said.

Last year’s champions, Alan and Daniel Lawrence, will be defending their title achieved at the Hobie 16 in Mossel Bay.

Visitors can watch the boats from the Shark Rock Pier. “If the wind is offshore, the boats will sail up towards the pier,” Boardwalk spokeswoman Caley Phillips said.

“In an onshore or easterly wind, they will sail downwind towards the pier. This can make for some spectacular sailing as the east also brings bigger chop and wave.”

The last time Port Elizabeth hosted the 42-year-old event was in 2005. The Boardwalk will host the event for the next three years.
