POPULAR pop and R&B US singer and songwriter Ne-Yo will be performing in Nelson Mandela Bay, along with at least three other top international artists – rapper and actor Ludacris and reggae artists Shaggy and Protoje.
The four will join homegrown artists, including Mi Casa and South Africa’s James Brown, Zakes Bantwini, at the M Bay Mega Fest music festival at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on June 2.
Festival organisers Zeranza said the concert was possibly the most high-profile one yet in the region.
Andrew Wessels, festival director and Zeranza chief executive, said the contracts had been signed and arrangements were now being made. “We feel confident this is one of the most exciting line-ups of artists ever secured for a single-day concert in the region,” he said.
“We are extremely excited to be hosting an event with performers of this magnitude in Nelson Mandela Bay, and we are confident the success of the first event will leave guests counting down the days until the next show.”
The municipality’s sports, recreation, arts and culture portfolio head, Babalwa Lobishe, said they would encourage municipal officials to support the event by buying their own tickets.
“We appreciate the service providers being willing to bring this big event to our community without having the municipality involved,” she said.
Ne-Yo started his career by penning the hit Let Me Love You for singer Mario and has since followed up with four albums. His fifth album, The Cracks in Mr Perfect, is due for release later this year.
Ludacris, who started rapping at the age of nine, has released seven albums and also has one due for release later this year. He is also an actor who has starred in 2 Fast 2 Furious, the award-winning Crash and New Year’s Eve.
Shaggy, the Jamaican-born US reggae singer and rapper, is best known for Boombastic, It Wasn’t Me, Oh Carolina, and Angel. The grammy-award winning artist has released 10 albums.
