SOUTH African Afro-jazz star Lerato “Lira” Molapo delivered on her earlier promise to give her fans an afternoon of musical bliss when she performed at the Boardwalk lawns in Port Elizabeth yesterday.
Her fans took advantage of the lovely spring weather to watch the multiple platinum-selling singer perform such hits as Feel Good, Ixesha and Noma Ungahamba.
An avid dancer, Miss Lira, as she is affectionately known, got down on stage to raucous applause. She gave adoring fans a lot of energy and vibe, as she had vowed to do last week as she prepared for the concert.
Lira’s performance in the Bay was part of her Captured Tour, which began at Carnival City last week.
Fans said they had got more than expected as Miss Lira brought the house down not only with her music and moves but her renditions of songs such as Miriam Makheba’s Phatha Phatha.
“I want you to have a good time,” she told the capacity crowd of 2600 people.
Concert viewers were impressed with how the songstress danced like nobody was watching.
Ardent fan Zukiswa Zoko, 35, of Zwide, said she had enjoyed every minute of the concert, especially when Lira danced.
“I have her DVD and love her performances, so seeing her live was just phenomenal,” she said.
Thumeka Lambani, 28, of KwaDwesi, said she felt “captured” by the singer.
“She did not disappoint at all and really gave value for money,” she said.
Anelisa Ngcana, 27, of Kwazakhele, said: “The concert was awesome. I thoroughly enjoyed the concert and the weather was just amazing. Amazing weather, amazing performance.”
The venue organisers, the Boardwalk complex, said they were pleased with the capacity turnout.
Marketing manager Tanuja Gangabishun said the Boardwalk was fast becoming celebrated artists’ choice of venue as new arrival Zahara Mkuthukane would also perform at the venue next weekend. “The concert was absolutely amazing and we were very pleased, but not surprised, with the turnout as Lira is a great, classy entertainer,” she said.
After the concert, the star took to social networking site Twitter re-tweeting fans’ posts about the concert.
@Drnenz tweeted: “Wow! Wow! Wow! All I can say is wow!”
@Zimmyvee posted: “Miss Lira rocking my Sunday afternoon. She sounds even better live.”
