A SURPRISE wedding is not something you hear about every day but for a Port Elizabeth man what he thought was a celebration to renew someone else’s vows, turned out to be his very own wedding.
Phil West got married to Vanie Ramasamy on Saturday night at the German Club in Lorraine following Ramasamy’s decision to surprise her groom.
Speaking about the decision to throw a surprise wedding, Ramasamy said: “He had asked me to marry him a couple of times but I just laughed it away or said no, because I did not feel ready.
“A couple of weeks ago, I found a letter he wrote to me a while ago. In the letter he said life without me was no life and love without me was not love. Reading that I just knew I did not want to live without him.”
After dating for two and a half years, Ramasamy decided it was time to tie the knot.
Only her brother, Neelan, was let in on the big secret. To get the wedding guests to the venue, she told them they would be celebrating West’s’ birthday.
“Phil was under the impression we were attending the renewal of my brother’s wedding vows and therefore he had to wear a suit and write a vote-of-thanks speech.
“As he entered the German Club, all the guests started singing Happy Birthday and Phil blew out candles.”
Ramasamy said the special day was made even better as a result of the guests who, “are all very important and special to us”.
After putting a DVD into a player, Ramasamy slipped away to change into her wedding dress. The DVD contained an acceptance of West’s proposal.
Ramasamy said guests were absolutely flabbergasted as they had received an invitation saying “50 + 1! Surprise”.
“At first, my dad was in shock about what happened, but everything is fine now.
“My in-laws called it a fairytale. Everything was in place and it was the right thing to do at the right time. We even have a baby on the way. I feel like he is my soul mate and one cannot live without your soul mate.”
Ramasamy added that life was returning to normal after “we have made some beautiful new memories at the German Club. Phil is a member so we go there often and now there are even more memories for us there”.
