Ball of fire over PE wasn’t beginning of end

WAS it a bird? Was it a plane? Was it a comet hurtling to Earth in delayed fulfilment of Harold Campling’s doomsday prophesy?
Well, no. In fact, it was the US space shuttle Endeavour, catching the last rays of the setting sun while docked at the International Space Station (ISS) 320km from Earth.
Port Elizabeth amateur astronomer Hermie Hertle of the PE People’s Amateur Observatory in Newton Park said yesterday he had received a number of calls about the strange “ball of fire” sighting in the south-west part of the sky above Nelson Mandela Bay, low over the horizon, at about 7pm on Sunday.
“One woman thought it might be a comet hurtling to Earth in fulfilment of the end of the world prophesy which we have been hearing.”
