Police fire rubber bullets at Honeydew protesters

POLICE fired rubber bullets at a group of protesting residents who stoned them, whole blockading Beyers Naude drive near Honeydew this morning (March, 30).

The situation is tense and the road is blocked,” said Lieutenant-Colonel Lungelo Dlamini. He said the police fired the rubber bullets to disperse the crowd.

Zandspruit informal settlement residents blocked the road with rocks and burning tyres shortly before 6am in a protest over service delivery.

Television footage showed protesters throwing stones at a police armoured vehicle near a bridge.

Johannesburg metro police said Beyers Naude drive had been closed to traffic.

“There are still rocks and tyres on the road, it has not been cleared yet,” Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said late on Wednesday morning.

Traffic on Beyers Naude Drive and Peter Road had been diverted.

“Motorists are advised to avoid the area as there are officers present and the road had to be blocked off,” said Minnaar.
