THE Hawks found a hit list containing the name of alleged underworld boss Cyril Beeka, who was shot dead on Monday during a raid on a house in Bedfordview, east of Johannesburg, an official said today (March 23).
The suspect was not at his home when the Hawks arrived on Tuesday night. On searching the house, we found documentation containing the names of the four individuals,” said spokesman McIntosh Polela.
“The suspect had drawn up a hit list of four individuals. Cyril Beeka, who was allegedly at the top of the list was gunned down in Cape Town a couple of days ago.”
Polela said the man whose house it was — named by several media as Radovan Krejcir’s house — was wanted on charges of fraud and murder.
“The aim was to arrest a 42-year-old suspect who is wanted on charges of fraud and murder,” he said.
“The suspect allegedly claimed R4.5 million rand from an insurance company, after obtaining fraudulent medical documents showing that he had terminal cancer.”
Polela said two people were taken in for questioning, but the 42-year-old man was still at large.
“Two suspects were detained for questioning, one in the suspect’s house and another in a nearby house belonging to the suspect’s associate.
“The suspect is still at large. We believe it’s in his interest to hand himself over to the Hawks. We will not let up in our attempts to find him.”
Beeka was gunned down on Monday afternoon in a drive-by shooting by two men on a motorcycle.
The Star newspaper reported that Beeka was Krejcir’s business partner but that their relationship had recently soured.
