When you decide to have children there should really be a disclaimer – a warning that your home will never quite look or even smell like it did before them.

Kids have a way of making their presence known, be it through scribbles on the wall or spills on the carpet.

Here are some cleaning tips for dealing with kid sized messes.

Disclaimer: I am by no means a cleaning expert and these are tips I’ve picked up off the net, from friends and from this super useful book my late gran had.

When play dough gets in your carpet:

– Remove as much as you can the moment you notice.
– Let the rest dry.
– Use a brush/fork to loosen the particles.
– Vacuum up the rest.
– Swear to yourself you will never let your kid play with play dough near a carpet again.
– Remember these tips for the next time you forget previous step.

Crayon on your wall:

1. Bicarbonate of soda method:

– Dampen a cloth or sponge.
– Sprinkle bicarbonate of soda on the damp cloth or sponge.
– Scrub the crayon marks gently with the baking soda. Don’t press too hard or you risk scratching the paint.
– Wipe the wall with a damp sponge to remove any remaining baking soda.

2. Eraser method:

– Rub lightly along the crayon marks with an eraser. You can use a standard pencil eraser, but do not press too hard or you can buff the finish off the paint.
– Wash that area of the wall with a warm, soapy sponge.
– Wipe the wall with a damp sponge to rinse.

3. Toothpaste method:

– Squeeze a small amount of non-gel toothpaste onto the crayon mark.
– Scrub away the crayon wax gently with an old toothbrush.
–Wipe the wall with a damp sponge to rinse.

4. White Vinegar method:

– Dip an old toothbrush into undiluted white vinegar.
–Scrub gently along the crayon mark.
–Wipe the wall with a damp sponge to rinse.

When there’s a spill of glitter/rice/anything small and annoying.
– If you couldn’t be bothered to pull out the vacume cleaner, just wrap your hand with sticky tape and press down.
