Rock the Hage will turn the clock back 50 years this weekend when the Day Trippers perform at the music festival in Uitenhage.
Along with other acts Hazard, Dark Custard and the Muir and Riebeek College school bands, the Day Trippers will jam together to raise funds for the Uitenhage SPCA.
The Day Trippers won The Herald On The Go show in 1969 and have been playing in their band from 1966, when they won the Uitenhage Battle of the Bands.
Today the four: Jannie Conradie, Victor Hugo, Pierre van der Westhuizen and Willie Williams are all retired and spread out around the country and world.
Three attended Brandwag High and one Muir College. Old Muirite Van der Westhuizen worked in the Volkswagen IT department and is still plays various gigs as a one-man show.
Of the Brandwag boys, Williams also worked at Volkswagen before retiring and is now involved with charitable work with the aged in the UK.
Conradie was an SAA national and international pilot and besides his music keeps busy with various projects in Gauteng.
Hugo went on to Stellenbosch University where he became a professor in the Faculty of Science and later Dean of the Faculty of Science. Now that he is retired, he runs a bed and breakfast establishment in Stellenbosch.
Rock the Hage is on Friday and Saturday, October 13 and 14, from 6pm to 11.30pm, with a 5pm start on Saturday. Admission is R70 per evening and proceeds are in aid of the Uitenhage SPCA.
