A new Mandela Bay Fashion Week started last night with young talent putting their stamp on the ramp at the Tramways Building in the CBD.

MBFW opened fashionably late with guest designer Tina Ngxokolo presenting the collection she debuted at African Fashion International Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in Johannesburg last month.

Cleo Allison, Redesyn Store and Thando Piliso also showed, sending out models dressed in next season’s ranges.

MBFW founder Llewellyn Williams said he had been looking forward to the first shows and was excited it was finally happening in the city.

“It’s great to see it go from a whole concept through to the reality,” he said.

Ngxokolo said she enjoyed being able to show an appreciative audience in her home city her work.

“It is basically the same range that I showed at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week but I have added a few tweaks,” she said yesterday of the vibrant Xhosa heritage-inspired garments.

Singer Vuyiseka “Lovechild” Maguga performed her souldful brand of jazz with a twist of reggae between the catwalk shows, and tonight Zoe Mtila will sing.

Williams said a judging panel would choose one designer from the MBFW programme and allow them the chance to hang their garments at national designer fashion retailer The Space, which would further boost the designer’s career.

Tonight sees garments from The Space, Itu Originals, Walk in Closet and Masoli, while Mechero, Rufain Wentzell, Ergo Zen, Zeiciah Mhaule and Thokrish Creations will present their work tomorrow.

Visitors to the Tramways Building also can also visit pop-up fashion stores tomorrow.
