A Presidential SA Fashion Week

The Presidential Collection made its debut at South African Fashion Week in Johannesburg last week, blending African haute couture and heritage in men’s and women’s fashion.

The menswear collection paid homage to the classic Presidential brand, mixed with contemporary wearable designs.

Among the items shown were biker jackets in ostrich leather, bomber jackets in batik silk, hand painted cotton blazers embellished with beadwork and embroidered in gold, and wool blend coats with embroidery.

The Presidential Queen collection combined silks with beadwork to create garments steeped with South African heritage.

The Presidential concept was born out of the Presidential Shirt brand, manufacturer and supplier of the Madiba Shirt.

Since then, Presidential has evolved and grown to include a number of select afro-centric products, focusing on African brands, leaders and icons including job creation enterprise Bayede!, which is endorsed by King Goodwill Zwelithini KaBhekuzulu.

The Presidential brand includes men’s shirts – hand-painted silk shirts, batik-printed shirts and embroidered cotton and jacquard woven shirts, as well as women’s kaftans and sarongs.

Fashionistas gave the collection the thumb’s up.

“It was a dynamic show which one has come to expect from the heritage brand, Presidential,” Style blogger Jerri Mokgofe said.

“There was a coherent story, beautiful styling, juxtaposed cuts and the use of fabric with lush texture that made me yearn to rub the fabrics in between my fingertips as the models walked past.”

Designer Pietro Giannuzzi said it had been an honour to design the collection.

“To have the freedom to express myself through design, to use the wonderful fabrics sourced by the Presidential team, and to pay homage to a brand steeped in South African heritage,” was an honour said Giannuzzi.

The collection has been designed and made in South Africa.

Many of the garments from SA Fashion Week will be for sale at Presidential stores in Nelson Mandela Square and OR Tambo International airport, while others will be available to order.
