Britain’s biggest entertainment channel, ITV Choice, hosted a star-studded showcase this week, with the likes of Martin Clunes making an appearance at The Venue in Melrose Arch, Johannesburg.
The aim of the showcase on Wednesday was to show audiences how the channel’s numbers have grown since being on air in Africa a little over a year now.
With new series such as Victoria coming up, and old favourites like Doc Martin gearing up for a new season, the British channel showed just why they have been in existence for some 70 years.
Channel director Katherine Wen said the channel had faced a challenge trying to grab audiences’ attention when it initially launched here in April last year.
“It took time for us to find our feet and find out what we can uniquely bring to Africa.
“But, since launching, we’ve doubled our numbers and this we can attribute to quality content,” Wen said.
While being interviewed by lifestyle guru Jenny CrwysWilliams, Doc Martin star Martin Clunes expressed his joy at being in South Africa and divulged what audiences could expect in the upcoming season eight of the British comedy.
Clunes, who plays the title character, a surgeon with a phobia of blood and cauterised flesh, said audiences would see how his relationship with love interest Louisa Glasson developed.
“We’ve used up their ‘will or won’t they’. But what they realised is that he can’t live without Louisa and neither can she [live without him].
“Therapy made him aware things could be addressed but he’s going to continue being grumpy,” Clunes said.
New shows coming to ITV Choice include the much anticipated Victoria, which started on Wednesday; returning for season two, Poldark, starting on October 4; and a return to the ITV Choice family in Cold Feet.
