Three highly rated Eastern Cape choirs are coming together tonight to treat music lovers to the best of pure choral sound.

Young voices from three regional choirs – the Eastern Cape Children’s Choir, the Eastern Cape Junior Children’s Choir and the Eastern Cape Youth Choir – will unite in the Dutch Reformed Church in Louis Botha Avenue, Summerstrand, at 7pm.

This year it will be the Eastern Cape Children’s Choir’s turn to host the annual Prestige Concert.

Choristers from the three choirs represent the Bay as well as surrounding towns as far as Patensie, Jeffreys Bay, Grahamstown and Fort Beaufort.

The youngest, aged six to 11, make up the Eastern Cape Junior Children’s Choir, under the leadership of conductor Hanlie Young and accompanist Lilian Zeelie.

Founded in 2008, this choir was the brainchild of Lionel van Zyl, conductor of the Eastern Cape Children’s Choir.

The choristers, who present their complicated repertoire with seemingly no effort and in the purest sounds, will easily steal the heart of concert patrons. The junior choir shared the stage with Manuel Escorcio and Emo Adams earlier this year.

The Eastern Cape Children’s Choir, whose members are aged 10 to 15 years, is celebrating the 30th year that conductor Lionel van Zyl and répétitrice and accompanist Amanda Engelbrecht have been involved. This choir regularly tours overseas and receives visiting choirs and orchestras from abroad as their guests.

The Eastern Cape Youth Choir, offers high school pupils the opportunity to sing, with members aged 12 to 18. Currently under the leadership of Petrus Meyer and pianist Isabella Scheepers, this choir was founded in 1977 and is the oldest youth choir in the country.

It recently took part in the annual ATKV National Animato Choir Competition again and was selected to sing in the final round in October.

Secular items to be sung by the choirs include Das Lied der Berge, Oktobermaand and a Michael Jackson medley, along with the likes of Fly Me to the Moon.

Sacred choir music includes Libera me from Faure’s Requiem, Jesu meine Freude by Bach and Alleluja, laus et Gloria by O di Lasso, among many other items.

Tickets at R60 (adults) and R40 for (children, students, pensioners) are at the door.
