National designers added their sparkle to wedding dresses in the final day of AFI Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Johannesburg at the weekend, with Bay talents highlighted in the showstopper at the end of the ramp show.

Former Bay designer Thabo Makhetha was one of a dozen national names who brought to life bridal gowns inspired by diamond rings at the Sterns Bridal Showcase. She accessorised her modern African maxi-wedding dress with crystal jewellery designed in conjunction with Port Elizabeth’s Nam Faku.

Faku said yesterday that her piece of body jewellery was a joint effort between the two.

“It was very long and elegant, we both used our creativity and it’s the most exquisite piece I’ve ever made,” she said of the regal beaded collar which extended down the back in long strands.

The Makhetha sleeveless dress had ethnic elements and was worn with a cream headwrap also accessorised with crystal jewellery.

The other 11 designers were: Kobus Dippenaar, Heni, Thabo Makhetha, NN Vintage, Francois Vedemme, Zarth, Stefania Morland, Suzaan Heyns, Danielle Margaux, Orapeleng Modutle, La Art Neviole Emporium and Werner Dey.
